Investigating Under-appreciated Plants for Novel Antimalarial Compounds

20150813_081207-2Working with the Gates Foundation’s Medicines for Malaria Venture, the Lilalab has been working in conjunction with Rutgers University as well as the University of Cape Town in order to uncover new candidates in the fight against malaria.

Achillia millefolium, commonly known as yarrow, was most recently examined as an antimalarial candidate, Yarrow has been used for centuries as an ingredient in folk medicines, for wounds and infectious diseases, and is a particularly rich source of sesquiterpenes which proved to have some potent antiplasmodial activities.
